17th World Congress of the International Association of Applied Linguistics
On behalf of the AILA 2014 Organising Committee, we would like to warmly welcome you to Brisbane for the 2014 AILA World Congress. August is a beautiful time of year in the river city, with warm sunny days and cool nights. The congress venue, Brisbane’s Convention Centre – rated as one of the best such facilities in the world, is in the heart of the city and will have the capacity to house all the Congress activities, making it easy to participate in Congress events while being within walking distance of hotels, cultural activities and entertainment venues.
The organisers already have been working hard to sketch out a program, and to develop events in line with our theme, «One World, Many Languages». We are excited about the Congress and the opportunity to welcome all of you to share our world – both that of applied linguistics and the special place that Australia is.

The AILA 2014 Launch Event was held on 18 July 2012. The event was attended by members of the academic community, diplomats, hoteliers and prospective sponsors and exhibitors. The cocktail party began with welcome speeches by the Sofitel Brisbane General Manager, Marcus Hanna, who kindly hosted the event, and the Managing Director of conference organisers ICMS Australasia, Bryan Holliday. Dr Christina Gitsaki, co-chair of AILA2014, explained the chosen theme of the AILA Congress, One World, Many Languages and its relevance to Australian society and other ethnically diverse communities worldwide.

Guests were also told that AILA2014 marks the 50th Anniversary of the constitution of the AILA Association and the great honour bestowed upon Brisbane and the Applied Linguistics Association of Australia (ALAA) to organise the 2014 World Congress. At the conclusion of the launch, AILA2014 promotional flyers and sponsorship brochures were distributed and recipients had the opportunity to ask questions about the Congress, its organisation and their prospective involvement in it.

Nicholas Evans from the Australian National University who will speak on Endangered Languages and Ann Cutler from Max Planck Institute, Nijmegen/University of Western Sydney who will cover Applied Psycholinguistics.
Professor Nicholas Evans
Nicholas Evans is Professor of Linguistics in the College of Asia/Pacific, Australian National University. He has carried out wide-ranging fieldwork on languages of northern Australia and Papua New Guinea, and the driving interest of his work is the interplay between documenting endangered languages and the many scientific and humanistic questions they can help us answer. In addition to grammars of two Aboriginal languages, Kayardild and Bininj Gun-wok, dictionaries of Dalabon and Kayardild, edited collections on a number of linguistic topics, and over 120 scientific papers, he recently published the widely-acclaimed crossover book Dying Words: Endangered Languages and What They Have to Tell Us which sets out a broad program for the field’s engagement with the world’s dwindling linguistic diversity. He has also worked as a linguist, interpreter and anthropologist in two Native Title claims in northern Australia, and as a promotor of Aboriginal art by the Bentinck Island women’s artists.
Anne Cutler
Anne Cutler is Director, Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics (Nijmegen, The Netherlands), Professor of Psycholinguistics, University of Nijmegen, and Professor at MARCS Institute, University of Western Sydney. In 1999 she was awarded the prestigious Spinoza Prize for her scientific research. Her research centres on the recognition of spoken language, especially how processing of speech is adapted to suit the native language. Her book, Native Listening, was published by MIT Press in August 2012.
