Conference Program

The aim of the Conference is the multi-dimensional diagnosis of the situation of the national, ethnic and language minorities in the EU member states. The Polish Presidency of the EU provides excellent opportunity for the debate on the status of the national, ethnic and language minorities in the EU and will result in high visibility of the conference conclusions.

The conference will consider various aspects of national, ethnic and language minorities life in the EU, with the focus on the following:

• Different historical experiences of minorities in the member states; historical determinants of the current status of minorities.

• Minorities protection in the European legal tradition; comparative analysis of the evolution of national and language policies in the member states

• Evolution of national and language policies in the member states

• Participation of minorities in democratic political process, civic and political  involvement of minorities

• Minorities and the evolution of contemporary European societies

• Migrations in EU and their influence on the status of minorities and the phenomenon of «new minorities”

• European multiculturalism and minorities
• Contemporary European media and minorities

The call for papers is addressed to researchers interested in the problems of national, ethnic and linguistic minorities; practitioners working in the field of national minority policies (EU, national, regional and local government level); politicians; and members of minorities and representatives of their organizations. The conference is interdisciplinary; contributions from the fields of political science, law, sociology, history, cultural studies, demography, linguistics are welcome.

The conference proceedings will be organized in plenary sessions, panel discussions and round tables bringing invited guests from various EU states. The papers will be presented and discussed in thematic sessions. Special open meetings of the Parliamentary Commission on National and Ethnic Minorities and the Joint Government and National and Ethnic Minorities Commission will be organized.

The conference languages are Polish and English. The organizers will provide simultaneous Polish-English translation of the conference proceedings.

Call for papers

The proposals should be submitted to the Conference Office (biuro@minority.org.pl).

The deadline for submission of paper titles and abstracts (max. 200 words) is June 15, 2011 (application form attached or available at the www.minority.org.pl). The Organizing Committee will inform about accepted paper proposals by June 30, 2011. The papers presented at the conference will be published in the volume of conference proceedings.

The deadline for papers submission, with summary and biographical note of the author is December 30, 2011. Planned publication date: Autumn 2012.

Costs and accommodations information

There is no conference fee. The organizers will provide meals for the participants (lunches and conference dinners), refreshments during the breaks in the proceedings and the cultural program.

The participants are expected to cover their own travel and accommodation costs.
