Multiple reference groups: Towards the mapping of immigrants’ complex social worlds.

The next GRITIM-UPF Seminar will be held on Tuesday 22 March from 12:30 to 14:00 at room 20.283 (Jaume I building, Ciutadella Campus).

My presentation is grounded in a contextual approach to acculturation, from the perspectives of social and cross-cultural psychology. As an introduction, the significant move from uni-dimensional to bi:-dimensional models of immigrants’ collective identities will be briefly presented. Next, it will be argued that quite frequently immigrants’ social worlds are complex and intricate – involving multiple reference groups as well as multiple cultural and social expectations – and that the multifacetedness of such social configurations calls for efforts toward their adequate mapping. Finally, examples of conceptualizations and methodologies which attempt to capture the richness of immigrants’ social worlds will be provided and discussed.
