Abstract : This session will be devoted to the research conducted by a group of researchers belonging to the recently created interdisciplinary UPF Research Group GREILI (Grup de Recerca en Espais Interculturals, Llengües i Identitats) from the Department of Humanities. In the session, Dr. Mireia Trenchs (IP) will present different studies which, since 2008, the group has been conducting within the discipline labelled “educational sociolinguistics.” This discipline provides us with a framework within which to draw a portrait of the linguistic and socialization phenomena influencing the process of socialization and integration of young newcomers in the unique bilingual/multilingual context of Catalonia. The methodological design and the results obtained in the first two projects (ARIE 2008 and ARAFI 2009) will be presented and we will outline the two current projects (ARAFI 2010 and Resercaixa 2010). Our research focuses on the study of language attitudes and ideologies held by immigrant youth in Catalonia. Our goals involve uncovering how the processes of identity and language ideology construction reveal themselves in the students’ everyday communicative practices and attitudes, as well as the impact of the educational contexts which appear to play a crucial role in fixing language attitudes in young immigrants: (a) the actions of teachers, including but not limited to those taking place in the “reception class” (aula d’acollida), as well as teachers’ attitudes and ideologies, (b) the interplay of the school with family members, (c) the interplay of the youth with the barri and its social projection, and (d) age of arrival in Catalonia as one of the factors at play in the educational and, thus, linguistic and social integration.
