Planned Behavior: The role of aspirations in domestic and international migration

Abstract: Do aspirations to migrate predict subsequent behavior? Although research has considered an orientation toward migration as indicative of future migration, no work has established an empirical link in Mexico, which is the origin of large portion of recent migrants to the United States. Using two waves (2002 and 2005) of the Mexican Family Life Survey (n=13,023), this research longitudinally assesses two stages in the migration process building upon the general model of migration decision-making proposed by De Jong (2000). The first assesses aspiring migrants, considering relevant factors at the moment at which individuals aspire to intermunicipal, interstate, and international migration but the move has yet to occur. The second longitudinally assesses the link between these three types of migration aspirations and subsequent behavior. Results show that aspirations are targeted and predict subsequent behavior.
