The Multicultural Individual: Socio-cognitive Dynamics, Individual Differences, and Psychological Consequences
Cultural contact due to migration, globalization, travel, and the resulting cultural diversity, has led to growing numbers of bicultural and multicultural individuals. Only in the US, 12% of the population is foreign born, 33% non-White, and 19% speak a language other than English a home (US Census, 2005). Although some theoretical and qualitative work on multiculturalism can be found in sociology, education, and applied psychological fields, lacking in the social sciences are empirically-based models of this phenomenon. This presentation will review an extensive program of psychological research that has elucidated how multicultural individuals process cultural information, how they integrate their different cultural identities, how they maintain competing loyalties between different ethnic groups, and the social and cognitive consequences of this type of identity.
Attendance must be confirmed before Friday 19 November to blanca.garces (arroba) upf.edu
